Name: Ronan 'Pretty Boy' O'Mahony
Age: 27
Most embarrassing sporting moment: Coming last in district javelin competition with a throw of less than one metre.
Profile: It's all been said before. Write his chances of at your peril. A
strong all rounder who knows when to play his joker. Does his real talking through his actions. Watch out all other competitors.
Joker round: Table Football
Chances: Worse than at the summer event, which I won because I was the best. I cannot see any events where I will have any particular weaknesses. Conversely, I cannot see any events where I will have particular strengths! However, am surely the most likely to 'medal' from Team O'Mahony.
Official odds: 3/1 fav
Name: Ian 'Desmond Douglas' Taylor
Age: 27
Most embarrassing sporting moment: Losing at arm wrestling to Zoë Neill in the 2nd year at school with his
"good arm". A mental scaring that has tarnished what could have been a
promising sporting career. Now having mastered the over the top technique
'Desmond Douglas' can't wait for the rematch.
Profile: A keen all rounder, but with specialist events such as table tennis, Chinese poker & 10 pin bowling in the line up, this could be the year for the boy Taylor. Was devastated at the late inclusion of table football.
Joker round: Table Tennis
Chances: As long as he's ahead of The Weasel, Taylor will go home a happy man
Official odds: 5/1
Name: Ross 'The Boy' Lane
Age: 26
Most embarrassing sporting moment: Having been very successful in school sports, The Boy's most embarrassing sporting moment came in Superstars 2004, when he failed to shoot a single basket in basketball and scored only a single goal in football.
Profile: Having recovered from his disappointment in Superstars 2004, where a miscount temporarily gifted him third place and a podium finish, The Boy is looking forward to Winter Superstars with relish. The Boy talks the talk, but did promise last time round that he would raise his game when a trophy was at stake. He spectacularly failed to deliver on the day and can we trust this man's bravado any more? Should this middle-of-the-road competitor be feared? Only time will tell.
Joker round: 10 Pin Bowling
Chances: Unsure. Most events can go any way, so will comfortably sit on the fence here.
Official odds: 6/1
Name: Nick 'Juggernaut' Clifford
Age: 27
Most embarrassing sporting moment: Completing the 80m Hurdles in 34sec after falling at the 2nd, 4th and 5th hurdles and rolling on the floor in laughter after the 5th; consequently Mr Barratt gave me a rollicking for not taking it seriously. (In my defence, Mr Barratt decided to raise the hurdles for my group as it contained such sporting greats as Jay Thomas, Andrew Brown, Wayne Kelly and Phil Lightfoot. I simply could not compete - although Andy Brown only
finished a few secs ahead of me, but that's because he is a short arse.)
Profile: Physically, the Juggernaut was destined to be a Winter competitor. Specialism in key events such as bowling and Chinese poker will put this competitor there or thereabouts, and anyone finishing above this man in the final table stands a real chance of overall glory.
Joker round: 10 Pin Bowling
Chances: Better than at the Summer Event!
Official odds: 9/2
Name: John 'The Cat' Catterfeld
Age: 26
Most embarrassing sporting moment:
The year: 1993.
The event: Monk v Watts Inter-House rugby.
The opportunity: Intercepting a pass on our own try line, wrong-footing the entire Watts backs, leaving a mere 80m sprint to score a heroic and spectacular try.
The failure: Despite massive cheers from the crowd, the young Catterfeld was caught and tackled. On the halfway line. Whilst having massive breathing difficulties. And walking.
Profile: An experienced competitor, The Cat will have to use all his ingenuity and subtlety when facing such event specialists in this year's Winter Superstars. Lack of practice in all events might leaving him scrambling for crumbs as the day draws to an end.
Joker round: Strawpedo
Chances: Will finish strongly in a few events, but not strong enough overall to reach the podium.
Official odds: 15/2
Name: Rob 'The Weasel' White
Age: 27
Most embarrassing sporting moment: Summer 2004 Superstars
Profile: The Weasel was robbed in 2004 and will therefore be making no effort
for the winter event. Contestant apathy has kicked in, so he shall be
missing balls, pressing wrong buttons, playing jokers and drinking slowly.
Joker round: 10 Pin Bowling
Chances: He will win
Official odds: 8/1
Name: Oliver 'Back Door' O'Mahony
Age: 29
Most embarrassing sporting moment: Mistakenly swimming freestyle in a breast stroke race and celebrating when he thought he'd won by miles.
Profile: This old donkey really is on his last legs and will require a real thrashing if he's even to stand a chance at mediocrity. At 29 years old his seniority will be no advantage due to a late start in life for many of the events. Only previous experience is a race against 'The Cat' in pint downing - with limited success. As a newcomer he may have the element of surprise on his side, though he resolutely refuses to practice any of the tabled events. May eat
a lot of beans beforehand and is least likely to play joker at snooker.
Joker round: Strawpedo
Chances: Limited
Official odds: 10/1
Name: Ruairi 'Niggler' O'Mahony
Age: 25
Most embarrassing sporting moment: Likely to be during Winter Superstars 2005 probably during snooker. He does believe that all contestants should use the same equipment thereby avoiding unfair advantages. For example those who are more familiar with snooker already have an advantage and should not be able to use there own snooker cues.
Profile: Seems to excel at most Summer sporting activities which probably explains his exclusion from last years Summer contest. He is certainly playing down his chances at this Winter event, despite being tipped for the title by many of the other contestants.
Joker round: Point Blank
Chances: He should be disappointed with anything lower that first place.
Official odds: 10/1
